The History of Ottomans

Posted by: admin  :  Category: GOUT

The ottoman must be appreciated for a number of reasons. It is certainly the least presumptuous of all living room furniture; standing alone, in the middle of your living room, forever playing second banana to the big, plush couch. Usually modestly sized and oftentimes less ornate and interesting than the other living room furniture; no extraneous material, no superfluous bits and pieces. The ottoman is simply a reasonably padded, moderately upholstered little square, asking nothing more than for you to put your feet on it. Some might think that it is unnecessary, the ottoman. That perhaps it is too much to have an ottoman when you already have a nice, big couch. But everybody knows, the second your plop your weary feet onto a friendly ottoman, it is a feeling beyond compare. As the weight is lifted from your tootsies and that instant gratification swims from your toes to your brain, you think to yourself, thank goodness for the ottoman, and you settle back to watch Wheel of Fortune.

Well, you can thank goodness all you want, but if you do, you are not giving credit where credit is due. Although it is not 100% clear who was first to prop their aching dogs upon a specially made stool, we can accredit the French for lending us the word, which refers to a type of textile fabric. We can also thank the Turkish folks for inspiring the idea with their invention of the divan, which is the name for a long mattress laid against the side of a room or a frame for people to lean on, fashionable in the 1800s.

However, the idea of foot propping devices has been in practice since the Renaissance period. The 15th century saw the tradition of more functional footstools; people adorning their sturdy wood ottomans with little drawers instead of fanciful upholstery, or hollow spaces in order to store household items. These were the kinds of hard-wearing footstools on which you could feel safe balancing on to reach your best pantaloons on the top shelf.

During the 16th century, ottomans were transformed into a decorative staple for the rich and worldly, ornamented with handsomely woven braids and tassels and rich, luxurious fabrics. Ottomans were referred to as tabourets, meaning a small drum, and in the French court, while the King was perched in his throne, only their wives or equally noble royalty had the privilege of parking their caboose on a tabouret. This practice of restricting the use of ottomans for the noble was referred to as ‘tabouret etiquette’ and was regarded a strict and serious matter.

As the 17th and 18th centuries rolled around, tabouret etiquette was significantly relaxed and the ottoman began to expand and reinvent itself. Ottomans could now look more like benches, or could have independent and interchangeable cushions; they could be found in anyone’s home now and oftentimes were. Due to the prevalence of a disease called Gout, caused by a build-up of uric acid around joints and tendons, footstools and ottomans were often used to keep the feet elevated; a treatment believed to aid in the sharp pain associated with gout.

As you can see, the ottoman has endured a long foot-covered journey to find its way into your living room and under your feet. Like a loyal dog, it resides in your living room all day, just waiting for you to come home to relax on it, offering its cushioned head for you to plop your feet on and sigh with comfort. This is what the ottoman craves – people. What could make you feel better than owning something which likes you for your feet?

Hot Stone Massages Help to Keep Arthritis Out of Your Joint

Posted by: admin  :  Category: GOUT

Have you ever suffered from arthritis? Many of us often have misconceptions about certain medical conditions. For instance, because elderly people often suffer from arthritis, we may conclude that it cannot affect younger people. That is wrong. Also, arthritis itself is technically not a disease. So what exactly is it? Arthritis is a medical condition that causes people’s joints to become swollen and painful.

Just the facts

Here are some interesting facts about arthritis:

• It includes more than 100 unique diseases that impact regions in or surrounding joints
• It affected about 46 Americans (1 in 5 adults) in 2006.
• It is the top cause of disability among Americans (at least 16-years-old)
• It yearly costs the U.S. economy $128 billion.
• It yearly causes over half a million hospitalizations
• It affects almost 300,000 children

Joints, bones, and antagonistic muscles

To better understand arthritis, we need to comprehend how our joints function. The bones of our skeletons work as a group of levers that move around joints, which are points where pivoting takes place. This happens as muscles switch between contracting and relaxing. Meanwhile, the muscles surround the joints in pairs. So each group of muscles directs bones in one particular direction, while a twin “antagonistic” muscle group moves the bones in the converse direction.

Among the numerous types of arthritis, here are some of the most common:

Osteoarthritis: This is the most common type of arthritis. It causes the joints to worsen. Cartilage covering the tips of bones within the join wears down. The result is that as the bone starts to scrape against the bone, one’s range of motion is reduced, and pain is created.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: This is a disease in which the body’s immune system attacks normal cells. The result of is that the lining of the joint becomes red or swollen. This type of arthritis mainly strikes women, and is one of the most powerful types of arthritis.

Gout: This condition primarily affects males. It usually results from a blemish in the chemistry of the body. In the majority of cases, this condition affects small joints and the big toe in particular. But there is good news for you! Gout can nearly always be totally managed with changes in diet, and certain medication.

Fortunately, you can use several types of treatment s for arthritis:

Medication: Numerous types of drugs can be used to treat arthritis, and they have different purposes. These can include reducing pain, lowering soreness, and attacking the disease itself.

Surgery: The majority of people who experience arthritis could never require surgery. On the other hand, surgery can be very beneficial for those with extremely damaged joints, and when other types of treatments are not effective. Joint replacement is the most popular form of arthritis surgery.

Physiotherapy: This can improve people’s strength, flexibility, and mobility. When used with medication, pain can be significantly reduced. Physiotherapists can create a treatment plan especially for you, which could include exercise, hydrotherapy, and pain relief methods.

Massages with hot stones are another type of effective treatment for arthritis sufferers. When we suffer from stress, our bodies produce too many hormones. Thus, the body attacks its own joints, resulting in rheumatoid arthritis. Through massage, the body’s muscles, ligaments and tendons are relaxed, thus creating balance within the body.

More specifically, a massage moves the muscle and regions around the joints, increasing the body’s circulation of blood and lymph. Thus, the body gets rid of more toxins. The ultimate result is that the movement of the joints is significantly improved. In addition to massages improving the condition of the actual joints, they also relieve the symptoms of arthritis. Massages warn arthritis to stay out of your joint!

The basics & learn about Arthritis

Posted by: admin  :  Category: GOUT

Maybe pain occurs, like when trying to open a jar. What’s it all about? Let’s look at the basics and learn more.

Arthritis actually means, “joint inflammation” and has over 100 related conditions or type / forms of disease. Left untreated, it can advance, resulting in joint damage that cannot be undone or reversed. So early detection and treatment are important.

The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although both have similar symptoms, both happen for different reasons. When joints are overused and misused, the results can be OA. What happens is that the cushioning cartilage that protects the joint breaks down, resulting in the bones rubbing together. This generally happens in the knees, but can be found in the hips, spine and hands often, too. And only in later stages will a person most often feel pain, after quite a bit of cartilage is lost.

The second type, RA, refers to the body’s immune system attacking joint tissue. Still not fully understood in the medical community, this condition most often starts in a person’s hands, wrists and feet. Then it advances to shoulders, elbows and hips.

Similar symptoms include pain, stiffness, fatigue, weakness, slight fever and inflamed tissue lumps under the skin. And both OA and RA generally develop symmetrically, i.e. affecting the same joints on both the left and right sides of the body.

A difference in OA and RA to note is with swelling. With RA, people report “soft and squishy” swelling. While with OA, people report “hard and bony” swelling. Another difference is that a person is more likely to develop RA if a sibling or parent had it. While a person with a history of joint damage, either an injury or chronic strain, runs a higher risk for developing OA.

There is no specific age for arthritis sufferers. While it can affect every age group, it seems to focus on those over 45 years of age.And while neither gender is immune, a reported 74 percent of OA cases (or just over 15 million) occur with women and a slightly lower percentage of RA cases occur with women. People with excess weight tend to develop OA, especially in the knees when reaching over 45 years of age. However, losing weight can turn the odds around almost by half. Regular activity combined with exercise also reduces risk, strengthening joint muscles and reducing joint wear.

Although there are no cure-alls for arthritis, there are a variety of pain relief treatment strategies. Aside from medications, remedies, replacement alternatives and other helpful treatment options and alternatives, the four main arthritis relief aids are gentle exercise, good nutrition, a positive attitude and rest. And each will be discussed further in subsequent sections, because education can play a huge role to dispel “old wives tales” and myths that “nothing can be done about arthritis.” Notable is that today, only a small percentage of those afflicted with arthritis become crippled. And most never need canes, wheelchairs, or other ambulatory devices.

Also note if you suspect you may have arthritis, it is advisable to seek medical advice. Because healthcare providers can help to determine if the symptoms are not something else like a virus or tendentious or other similar problem that cold potentially worsen if left untreated.

Types Of Arthritis

There are many ways to effectively manage arthritic pain today to find relief. Available are arthritic diets, exercise programs, over-the-counter and prescription medications, relaxation and positive emotion coping techniques. Also available are surgeries, supplements, home remedies, natural and other alternative therapies. When arthritis is first suspected, it would be wise to seek a medical opinion first. Then as time and resources allow, check out the other options.

After osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), three other major types of arthritis are systemic lupus erythematosis, Ankylosing Spondylitis and gout. Let’s take a look at each:

Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE) – This form of arthritis mainly affects women. It develops in the skin, internal organs and joints.

Ankylosing Spondylitis – This form or arthritis affects the spine and can also affect the ankles, knees, lungs, heart, shoulders and eyes.

Gout – This is a painful affliction mainly for men, about one million of them in the United States alone. Uric acid build up, due to an internal chemical malfunction, forms crystals that get stuck in a joint, generally the big toe, and become inflamed.

Science Of Arthritis

Joints can handle some heavy pressure. For example, knees handle a force of three to four times a person’s total body weight on average just talking a walk. The force of a deep knee bend during a squat can increase to nine times the body weight. So just imagine multiplying weight of more than 150 pounds times a minimum of three or four, and then even more. That can sure add up to a lot of heavy work on knee joints over time.

Now for the science of this scenario. Where two bones meet, called the joint, the bone ends are covered with cartilage, also known as gristl

This cartilage is sturdy, elastic and spongy or compressible, and keeps the bones from moving against each other at the joint. The cells of this cartilage, called chondrocytes, are thought to be the longest living cells of the body. Surrounding the bones and cartilage is strong, fibrous capsule lined with synovium, a thin membrane that lubricates the joint area with fluid. The end result is less friction or smoother rubbing together of the bones. This fluid also feds the cartilage cells, keeping them healthy, and is “pumped” into them during joint movement. Thus lack of movement (activity / exercise) can be unhealthy.

Other parts of the body features involved with this arthritic scenario include muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursea and mental activity. Muscles, attached to bones with tendons and ligaments, move bones by contracting. They also cushion movement, absorbing impact or shock. Throughout the muscle and tendon areas are bursae or sacs filled with fluid. These also help cushion movement. And throughout all the coordination of these parts during movement, the brain is a part. The brain communicates via nerves throughout the body, in particular the muscles for this scenario, to prepare joints for activity.

The exact science of what actually causes arthritis is still being researched. For most of the 100-plus forms of arthritis, the causes are unknown. Injury, overuse of joints and mechanical issues with joints (like skeletal abnormalities, worn out joint muscles) can lead to arthritis. And much point to issues relating to bacteria and germs as some of the problem. Heredity, stress, drugs, food allergies and viruses have also been linked to some forms of arthritis. So have diet, poor circulation and lack of movement.

INFLAMMATION
Arthritic joints can be affected with inflammation when bacteria or a virus (or other undesirable element) enters the joint area or when an injury occurs. What happens is when foreign matter enters this area or the area sustains injury, white blood cells, antibodies and other natural “fighting” mechanisms automatically kick in internally to help. These fighters cause swelling, redness and heat as the body fluid moves around. Symptoms of inflammation, one of the uncomfortable issues associated with arthritis, are redness, swelling and tender joints.

Things to Know About Joint Pain Relief

Posted by: admin  :  Category: GOUT

With about 70 million people affected with joint pain in the U.S. alone, more and more sufferers are looking for effective means of achieving joint pain relief. Joint pain can be caused by many factors such as old age, hereditary conditions, diseases and neglect. Determining what causes your joint pain is essential because if the pain is not properly addressed, more importantly if a serious disease has brought about the pain, certain complications can arise. This will lead to more pain and discomfort for the sufferer.

There are many factors which can cause joint pain. Some of the less complicated conditions associated with pain of the joints include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Osteoarthritis is the most common type and it occurs when the protective cartilage which covers the bones wears and tears away. This can then lead to the rubbing of the bones together. Because of the friction, pain and swelling is induced and it worsens when the cartilage is further damaged. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic joint condition which is less common than osteoarthritis. It is autoimmune in nature because the body’s immune function causes the joint to swell and causes inflammation that can eventually spread to the other tissues. The last one, which is gout, affects the knees, toes and wrists and has something to do with the uric acid deposit build-up. This can bring forth the formation of needle like crystals and can be very painful for the joints.

For basic joint pain relief NSAID also known as non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, glucosamine, chondroitin, and others are prescribed by doctors. For other treatment options, physical therapy, orthopedic bracing, changes in lifestyle, joint replacement surgery or arthroplasty are just some of the means used in helping sufferers to live and lead a quality life.

But some medications when in excess can bring forth many complications especially for the kidneys. Also, some people don’t get the relief they wanted from these drugs. Others dread the long term effect of synthetic drugs for their health and so, they resort to alternative and natural medications to manage joint pain.

For one, acupuncture has benefited millions of people all over the world. Acupuncture can work for other chronic pain diseases as well. It works by the principle of targeting body areas to release good body chemicals that can combat pain. Also, it has been suggested that acupuncture shuts off pain receptors in the body.

Vitamin c is also essential in pain management. Vitamin c protects the joints from more adverse effects brought about by the wear and tear subjected to the joints. It also plays an important role in the production of bone and cartilage.

If you would like to shift to the alternative means of achieving joint pain relief, be sure to consult your physician regarding your plans. Your physician can advice you if discontinuing certain medications can be detrimental for you. Also, you cannot be sure if taking medications and herbal supplements at the same time can result to chemical reactions that can be poisonous for you.

Ph Balance Of The Human Body / Unhealthy Verses Healthy / Acidic Verses Alkaline

Posted by: admin  :  Category: GOUT

Have you ever thought about the human body what makes it tick. What makes it produce static electricity and generate energy so that we may do a multitude of tasks at any given moment in time. Where does the magnetism come from and how does it operate. Well that’s what we’re going to talk about.

There is not a computer or a machine built by man today that is more complex and wonderful to behold than the human body.  Now many scientists do disagree on the amount of cells we possess, some believe 6 trillion cells and others believe over 60 trillion cells. Who cares who’s right, the fact of the matter is the human body is simply amazing. There’s just one question I want to ask? What gives it the spark of life, energy, magnetism? That’s the question I’m going to attempt to answer for you.

When you and I take in a breath of air we are not only breathing in oxygen, but we are also breathing in nitrogen and pollutants as well. Of the air that we breath on a daily basis approximately 18 to 24% is only oxygen almost 70 % is nitrogen and the rest is carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and other pollutants that we have put into our atmosphere over time and space. Now what about this nitrogen? Nitrogen is what I like to refer to as the spark of life. It is the nitrogen in the air that we breath that sparks the neurotransmitters ot the brain to send messages throughout the human body telling it what to do at any given moment in time. Yes, but how does it do that you may ask?

Our bodies are a complex structure of skin, matter, water, blood, cerebral spinal fluid, organs, veins and arteries etc. etc. etc., that are primarily composed of Ions, Protons, Neurons etc.  that are  the cataclysts for the electical charges emitted by the human body. These electrical charges are first started by that first chemical we talked about,  Nitrogen, which is responsible for igniting the spark to send messages via the brain through neurotransmitters to the rest of the body. These messages are sent through the central nervous system of the body through the spine telling the body what to do.  Your spine is not only a skeletal structure of bones to hold you upright and keep you together but it is also a protective covering for the central nervous system made up of veins, arteries and oxygen rich blood to name a few. It is through this central nervous system that the brain sends messages throughout the body via the blood and water.

Now what is all this leading up to you may ask? It is leading up to that key chemical in the human body called hydrogen. What about hydrogen. Have you ever heard of the PH balance of the human body. PH stands for Potential of Hydrogen within a mixture. PH balance is measured from 0 to 14, and yes you guessed it 7 is balanced or by some referred to as neutral. If your test shows under 7 you are acidic and over 7 is alkaline. What you want to do is to take your body from being acidic to alkaline because disease cannot co-exist in an alkaline body. Alkaline means more oxygen in the blood and the more oxygen rich your blood is the less chance you have of being sick or contracting a  disease. Disease cannot exist in an alkaline body. So how do I bring my body to be more alkaline you may ask? Good question.

First of all there are many foods that are acidic and many that are alkaline. Tomatoes for example are very acidic and yet pasta without the sauce on it is alkaline.  Before you even attempt to bring your body to being alkaline it is a good rule of thumb to know your blood type and see what foods are good to eat for your blood type. Eating the wrong combination of foods is one of the greatest disease producing venues on the planet today. You may think you are eating a balanced diet yet the wrong combination of foods for your blood type is detrimental to your health. Get on the internet and search foods for certain blood types.

To bring this into perspective let me share with you what happened to me a year ago. Our family had an anniversary I attended at a Mandarin Restaurant ( an all u-can eat buffet ) but as it turns out I overindulged in Shrimp and Prime Rib ( red meat ) and the next day I contracted gout  ( an arthritic disease ) and I could not walk. My big toe was the size of a tennis ball. Gout basically is too much uric acid in the blood caused by the wrong combination of foods taken in simultaneously. Now, I am an O blood type which means I am a meat eater and my body needs more meat as well as lots of fruit and vegetables yet someone who is a B or AB blood type needs to be eating more fruit, vegetables and fish yet less meat.

The wrong combination of foods is why many people have a multitude of problems and get sick.Certain foods taken simultanously can be detrimental to your health. It is good to find out what blood type you are and what foods are good for that blood type. One last thing, you must  bring your body to being more alkaline from acidic by starting to drink more herbal teas and green teas instead of too much coffee. Also start making your own lemonaide with lemons and limes which are good alkaline foods. You will notice a huge difference if you start doing this on a regular basis. Implement good habits like this and good things will follow as far as your health is concerned.

Special Warning stay away from chinese green teas as they still use DDT on their crops in China. DDT ( d ichloro d iphenyl t tichloroethane - which is a synthetic pesticide ) was banned in North America in the 1960’s since it is one of the hightest cancer causing agents on the planet. Green teas from Japan, the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom is a safe bet.

Our bodies are made in such a way that they may heal themselves as long as you are injecting the right things into them. Our amazing immune system is made in such a way that it will fight off sickness and disease given the right circumstances and the right chemicals meaning the right nutrients and enzymes necessary for the human body. The four main reasons people get sick is, 1) the  wrong combination of foods taken in simultaneously, 2) chemicals in the air we breathe, 3) chemicals in the food we eat, or 4) a blockage in the body.  That blockage may be in the form of a blocked colon, blocked artery, a pinched nerve or a blocked gland .  Only around 15 % of sicknesses are heredity or from a virus while 85% are a result of these four things. Now having said this I am not one of the only people on this planet that adheres to this theory. Norman Walker who was a Doctor and a Naturopath who lived to be 99 years of age and cured multitudes of people of a myriad of diseases also subscribed to this theory.

Just a down to earth guy who only had 3 weeks to live due to liver disease and learned how to heal himself through alternative natural healing. For more information on Natural Healing, Natural Remedies, Alternative Medicine, and Natural Cures to Disease go to http://freedomfrominfirmities.com

Tom’s doctor said he had a slim chance of recovery since his liver, kidneys’ and pancreas were all in bad shape and he is still here to tell his story.

Because healthcare providers can help to determine if the symptoms are not something else like a virus or tendonitis or other similar problem that cold potentially worsen if left untreated.

And many point to issues relating to bacteria and germs as some of the problem.

Episodic Oligoarticular Arthritis and Podagra

Posted by: admin  :  Category: GOUT

Podagra-severe inflammatory arthritis at the world-class metatarsophalangeal joint-is the nearly frequent demonstration of gout. Patients unremarkably describe waking inside the middle of the dark with striking pain, redness, swelling, and warmth of the region. Flares of urarthritis typically create one of the nearly acute forms of inflammatory arthritis. The toes and, to a lesser extent, the midfoot, ankles and knees ar the nearly green websites for urarthritis flares. Urarthritis flares oftentimes occur inward circumstances that ameliorate blood serum uric dot amounts, such every bit metabolic stressors leading to elevated desoxyribonucleic dot or adenosine triphosphate (ATP) turnover (eg, sepsis or surgery) or dehydration.
Agents that decoct prostaglandin deductive reasoning (eg, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), decrement neutrophil migration into the joints (eg, colchicine), or decrement the activation of myelomonocytic cells (eg, corticosteroids) decrement the duration of the gouty flare. Gouty arthritis arse live diagnosed by testing of synovial fluid from an actively inflamed roast below a polarizing microscope.
Monosodium urate crystals could live seen every bit negatively birefringent needle-like structures that carry across the diameter of and therefore ar engulfed by polymorphonuclear neutrophils. Firm, irregular subcutaneous deposits of monosodium urate crystals may occur inward individuals with continuing urarthritis and therefore ar referred to every bit tophi.
Tophi nearly frequently conformation along sinewy tissues on the extensor muscle surfaces of joints and tendons every bit well every bit on the outer spiral from the ear. This kind of tophi power extrude chalky material, containing urate crystals, onto the skin coat and arse live viewed for symptomatic purposes below polarized microscopy. Inward just about individuals, the total eubstance burden of uric dot increases greatly over many years; deposits of monosodium urate crystals occur at numerous roast websites.
This may result inward a lasting but more indolent inflammatory arthritis related to remodeling from the thin synovial membrane into a thickened inflammatory tissue. Destructive and irreversible roast deformities resulting from off-white and cartilage erosions oftentimes develop inward this circumstance. Renal tubular injury and nephrolithiasis arse also develop below these problems.
Treatment for acute gouty arthritis consists of brokers that decoct inflammatory cubicle recruitment and activation towards the mired joints. Inward contrast, bar or prophylaxis of repeated attacks of gouty arthritis demands continuing discourse to decoct blood serum uric dot amounts into the rule array, just where disintegration of crystals is favored.
A number of brokers ar obtainable that arse attain this objective. These include uricosuric agents (eg, probenecid), which ameliorate excretion of uric dot to the urine, and allopurinol, which inhibits uric dot deductive reasoning by forbiddance of xanthine oxidase (a critical enzyme inward the uric dot synthetic pathway). Xanthine oxidase inhibitors ar conceptually worthy for discourse of uric dot overproducers (10% of individuals), and uricosuric agents for treating uric dot underexcretors (90% of patients).
However, brokers that decrement uric dot yield arse live utilized for therapy of hyperuricemia irrespective of gun trigger and ar frequently a lot more convenient inward terms of dosage regimens. Several newer recombinant corpuscle therapies, including an enzyme called uricase that straight breaks land uric acid, and a soluble IL-1 receptor antagonist, have shown promising too soon outcomes inside the relieve of refractory gout.

Shoes and Shortcomings of the Nobility

Posted by: admin  :  Category: GOUT

Noble Shoes have been used to demonstrate a person’s rank in society since at least the time of the Egyptian pharaohs. Sandals with pointed toes could only be worn by those of higher stations in ancient Egyptian society, with slaves going barefoot and commoners wearing sandals made of woven papyrus. The aristocrats of medieval Europe wore elaborate impractical shoes to demonstrate that the wearer did not perform manual labor.
Royalty and nobility have had a major impact on footwear fashions, in many cases starting fads by wearing shoes to disguise what they perceived to be less than flattering physical qualities. Pointed shoes became fashionable in France as a result of a count who wanted to hide his deformed feet. French king Philip Augustus subsequently decreed a limit to the lengths of shoes according to the wearers’ places in society.

Despite the royal decree, footwear grew to increasingly impractical lengths and became a tripping hazard to the wearers. The fourteenth century saw shoes grow so long that chains sometimes linked the toes of the shoes to the knees of the wearer to keep the toes up. Laws were eventually passed in some areas limiting the length of shoe points to about two inches.

King Henry VIII made it fashionable to wear wide-toed shoes. It is believed he did this to conceal his feet that were swollen as a result of gout. Parliament found it necessary to pass a law limiting the width of shoes because fashion took the widths of shoes to extremes.

Louis XIV wore high-heeled shoes to conceal his short stature, a custom that caught on with the men of his court. Although high heels subsequently became fashionable for women, heels became much lower after the French Revolution because of the association of high heels with the excesses of the aristocracy. Mary Tudor (“Bloody Mary”) was another monarch who wore heels as high as possible to conceal the fact that she was “vertically challenged.”

In 1986, 2700 pairs (Accounts of the numbers of shoes found vary.) of shoes were found in Malacanang palace after Filipino first lady Imelda Marcos fled the Philippines with her husband, Ferdinand. The shoes became a symbol of the extravagance of the first couple among the poverty of the island the strongman ruled for more than twenty years.

Shoe fashion for Western youth of the twenty-first century has origins in basketball and hip-hop subcultures. Shoes worn by popular hip hop artists and basketball stars such as Michael Jordan became popular in the late 1980’s. Tragically, the shoes became so popular that children were murdered for their sneakers. Puma recently launched two shoe models based on the old television series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” which starred rapper and movie star Will Smith.
Thus, even in an age in which most monarchs are only figureheads, royalty – albeit of a different sort – still plays a role iootwear fashion.
