Gout Sore Toe: Drinking beer = sore toe ?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Treating Gout

My 10 year old son couldn’t fathom how drinking beer could affect your toe.
Gout is a condition that often affects older men, not just men and not necessarily older men.  But generally that is the case.

But how does drinking beer make your toe swell, go red and ache?

Well, gout is a condition of overload.  If you are drinking beer excessively and more than likely your diet consists of fast food and meat, you are very susceptible to gout.  It is a lifestyle condition.  If you are overloading your system with wrong foods, drinking lots of alcohol, have the unlucky gene, then chances are you will more than likely get gout.  Gout is a condition that has been around for centuries.

What happens is that your kidneys can’t handle the excessive waste products and the uric acid overload has to find an outlet therefore it crystallizes and travels to various joints in the body.  For some reason the big toe is often the first place that gout attacks.  Other parts of the body that suffer can be the fingers, elbows, knees, feet etc.  It is not a pretty sight and it hurts like hell. Imagine waking up with a hangover as well as an aching toe, no fun at all.

Gout is more about the lifestyle of the beer drinker than the beer itself.  Many beer drinkers who have had gout may find they have been living a sedetary lifestyle with little exercise.  These factors add to the risk of getting gout.

So can you still drink beer if you have gout?

Its not advisable.  Beer is full of purines which increase the level of uric acid level in your body.  To avoid gout a few changes are required.  They don’t have to be big changes but you still need to live a quality life.  Having gout isn’t giving you a quality of life.
